“Hey, I’m glad I could help.” Faron snuck a glance at

Greg’s hands. He wanted one back. Greg’s touch carried a

warmth that came without ulterior motives, and Faron

realized how much he craved that sort of contact.

“So, uh, how did you end up at the Sunset? Sounds like

you started out at a chalet or something.”

Greg sighed. “Yeah. I drove over to Coburn’s house, and

we had a couple of drinks in front of the fireplace, and he

started getting, you know, friendly, and after a few rounds of

me parrying his thrusts and blurting out apologies, he

suggested we take a breather at the Sunset. He thought it

might ‘relax’ me.”

Uh-oh, this wasn’t sounding good. “So… why couldn’t

he give you a ride? Did he have too much to drink or

something?”

“Nope. Guess again.”

“After you got there, he hooked up with someone else.”

“Maybe. I don’t know.”

What was left? “Um… after you got there, he

disappeared.”

Without looking at Faron, Greg pointed to him and said

wryly, “Give this boy a big cigar.”

“But if you went there together, how’d he give you the

slip?”

“He told me to go ahead and order a drink, that he was

making a quick stop at the men’s room, but….” Greg lowered

his head.

“He never came back.”

“You got it. I suppose that’s why he suggested we take

my car. He must’ve figured he’d either find another ride or

walk home. For all I know, he could’ve made a phone call on

the sly and had someone pick him up.”

“What a fucking jerk,” Faron said with acid scorn. He’d

run into plenty of dicks without consciences. It broke his

heart that Greg’s first date with a man had ended this way.

“Where’d you meet him?”

Greg slid Faron a sidelong glance. “I answered an ad on

Craigslist.”

“Oh, man, you’re shittin’ me. That’s about the worst—”

“Save it, okay? I’m humiliated enough.”

“Don’t be humiliated. That means you gave that asshole

power over you.” Faron glanced at Greg, and for a moment

their eyes met. “What you need is to be careful.”

“No kidding.”

Faron reluctantly broke eye contact as they rolled into

town. He dropped his speed to thirty-five and cruised past

the tawdry fairgrounds, the small hospital complex, several

neighborhood streets lined with houses neither old nor new.

The Rapids would be busier on a Friday night, even in

November. But Faron didn’t miss it.

He pulled up to the stop sign where County J

intersected with Main Street.

“Faron?”

“Hm?” He eased through the intersection and headed

out of town in the opposite direction.

“Could we talk when we get back to the house? Or are

you too tired?”

“No, I’m not tired. I got plenty of sleep at my parents’

place. There wasn’t much else to do once the sun went

down.”

Except brood. Over Lance, who’d treated him as

shabbily as that Coburn dude had treated Greg. Over Mose,

the shunned misfit with whom Faron had had his first time.

And over his own uncertain status in a community already

wary of his intentions.

Yeah, maybe a talk with Greg would benefit them both.
